The old queen grabs about 60% of the colony and then swarms away from the overcrowded hive in search of a new suitable place to live in and start a new beehive. They will burrow into almost anything.

A swarm of bees may contain anywhere from 2,000 to 30,000 bees. This instinctive process it's nature's mechanism for colony reproduction.

A good nest site has to be large enough to accommodate the swarm (15 liters in volume), has to be well protected from the elements, receive a certain amount of warmth from the sun, and not be infested with ants.

Now, for the most part. Bees tend to find suitable such areas as underneath sheds, structural walls such as stucco, siding, drywall, block wall, and new construction walls. As well as chimneys, attics or cross spaces meaning inside of residential or commercial roofs.
